How does the AI receptionist handle accents and callers who speak another language?
Your line answers in one language, and the receptionist is built not to guess at language: it asks a caller to repeat rather than switching on a word that sounded foreign. How accents are handled and what to do if you need a second language.

Your line answers in one language, which is English unless we have set it up otherwise. Accents are handled inside that language, and the receptionist is deliberately built not to guess: a word that sounds foreign is treated as something it may have misheard, so it asks the caller to repeat rather than switching languages. If you need a second language on your line, ask us — it depends on the speech setup behind your number, which we configure for you.
Accents
Most "it did not understand me" moments on a phone line are a single misheard word, not a language problem, and the receptionist is instructed to treat them that way:
- It never switches language because a word sounded foreign. One unusual-sounding word in an English sentence is almost always a mis-hearing on a phone line.
- If a word makes no sense in context, it asks the caller to repeat it instead of answering the word it thought it heard. A booking made on a guess is worse than a second question.
- Your service names stay exactly as you name them. When a caller describes a service in their own words, the receptionist maps it back to your service before it books anything — so your calendar and your reports keep your names, not the caller's.
When a caller asks for another language
If your line is English only and somebody asks for another language, the receptionist says kindly that it can only help in English on this line, and carries on helping them in English. It does not pretend, and it does not read out a list of languages it might or might not have.
If your line is set up for a second language, a caller who asks for it gets it: the receptionist answers in that language and stays in it until they ask to switch back.
If you need a second language
Ask us. Which languages a line can handle depends on the speech setup behind your number, and that is something we configure rather than a switch in your settings. Tell us the language and the business, and we will tell you whether we can put it on your line today.
What you can change yourself
You choose the voice your callers hear, and you can preview it before you save it. Changing the voice does not change which language the line answers in.
Check that it worked
- Call your own number and say a service name the way a customer would.
- The booking that comes back should use your service name, not the caller's wording.
- Ask for a language your line is not set up for. You should hear a polite "only English on this line", never silence and never a switch.
Troubleshooting
- It keeps asking a caller to repeat one word. That is the design working on a bad line, but it is worth checking whether the word is a service name customers say differently — tell us and we can teach it that wording.
- A caller was answered in the wrong language. Report the call. Language is set per line, so this is configuration rather than something the caller did.
- Nobody is answering in your second language. Confirm with us that the line is actually set up for it; being able to hear a language and being able to answer in it are two different parts of the setup.
