Take card payments and tips on the POS
Switch on card payments, connect a card reader, set tip options and split a bill. Plus what still works on the register when your internet drops.
- Sonorch
- SeasonX
- Lumoras POS
To take card payments, move to a plan that includes cards, connect a supported card reader to each device that checks out, then set your tip options. The free tier takes cash and gift cards only. Card numbers are handled by the payment processor, and Lumoras never stores them.
What this does
Card payments let customers pay by card at the chair, the counter or the table. The customer sees tip options on screen, and the tip is recorded against the staff member on the sale. Splitting a bill lets two or more people pay their own share.
Set up card payments
- Make sure your business is on a plan that includes card payments. See plans and billing.
- On each device that will take cards, open Settings, then the payments section.
- Sign in to the payment provider when asked. SeasonX restaurants take cards on a Zettle reader.
- Pair the card reader with the device, and keep it charged and nearby.
- Run a small test sale, then refund it.
Set tip options
- In Settings, open the tips section.
- Enter the tip percentages customers will see on screen.
- Save. A custom amount and a no-tip choice are shown alongside your percentages.
Tips are recorded per staff member, so reports show who earned what. In Sonorch, tips feed into commission and tip splits for payroll.
Split a bill
- Split a payment when one person pays part in cash or with a gift card and the rest by card.
- Split a check in SeasonX by item or evenly between guests.
Example: a $90 check split evenly between three guests is three card payments of $30 each, and each guest picks their own tip.
When the internet drops
Cash sales and orders keep working on the device and sync once you are back online. Plan for card payments to need a connection, and keep cash on hand as a fallback.
Check that it worked
- Your test sale shows as paid by card in your sales list.
- The tip from the test sale appears under the right staff member.
- The refund shows against the original sale.
Troubleshooting
- The card option is missing at checkout. Your plan may not include cards, or the device is not signed in to the payment provider.
- The reader will not pair. Check its battery, turn Bluetooth off and on, and move it closer to the device.
- Card surcharges or cash discounts. Rules differ by state and card network. Check what applies to you before turning either on.
